Promoting the use and understanding of
corrosion-inhibiting admixtures in concrete.
The Newsletter of
The Concrete Corrosion
Inhibitors Association

Volume 1 ~ Issue 1
September 2000

Corrosion Inhibitors are a must in Coastal Concrete, Parking Garages and Bridge Structures.

Salt causes corrosion in concrete.

Carbonation can also lead to serious corrosion problems in other concrete structures as well.

New Association Formed

Many Years of Successful Use Prove the Effectiveness of Corrosion Inhibitors in Concrete

In Reinforced Concrete it is Important to Maintain the Bond between the Reinforcing Steel and the Concrete.

The Concrete Corrosion Inhibitors Association has been formed to promote the use and understanding of corrosion inhibitors in concrete. This new association will develop and provide educational material, and technical and statistical information to encourage the use of corrosion inhibitors in concrete to improve concrete durability in marine applications, parking facilities and the infrastructure. The Association will also explore other avenues, such as by providing support to research and scientific inquiry, involving the use of corrosion inhibitors in concrete.

The commercial use of corrosion inhibitors over the last 20 years has proven the effectiveness of inhibitors in concrete. Where coatings tend to degrade in wet concrete, the FHWA has shown that a corrosion inhibitor was still present in the concrete after 19 years of service. A corrosion inhibitor, which is admixtured into the concrete, does not allow dissolved iron to move into concrete, expand and crack the concrete. Intuitively, this is difficult to understand, yet, corrosion inhibitors are the most effective method of corrosion protection in concrete.

The association, which is made up of companies with strong technical staffs, will show data to prove the effectiveness of these materials and provide easy to understand explanations of why they work so well.

CCIA Made up of Strong Construction Companies

AXIM Concrete Technologies is America’s fastest growing admixture company. AXIM’s complete corrosion inhibitor system includes products for both new construction and post-treatment, covering the entire life cycle of concrete.

Grace Construction Products is a worldwide leader in developing and marketing products for the construction industry. DCI is recognized around the world for strength, durability and the chloride resistance it imparts to concrete.

Founded in 1909, Master Builders, Inc. is the leading innovator in the development, manufacturing and marketing of construction products for improving and protecting concrete. A unique combination of products, Rheocrete CNI, a 30% calcium nitrite corrosion inhibitor, and Rheocrete 222+, a duel mechanistic pore-blocking and film forming corrosion inhibitor are offered.

CCIA promotes Life - 365

Life-365 is a consensus model for service-life and life-cycle cost predictions associated with different corrosion protection strategies for steel embedded in concrete.

This model which shows well the advantages of corrosion inhibitors was created under the auspices of the Strategic Development Council of ACI
